This blog was written by Robert, who is doing an internship with Mightifier as a part of his studies in physical education at University of Jyväskylä (Finland). When he’s not at Mightifier, he teaches social and emotional skills in the university and spends time with his dearest hobbies: basketball and reading!

My ten-day internship with Mightifier is about to be done. It’s time to look back and see what got me here in the first place, what have I been doing here and what have I learned! Let’s go back in time a little bit.

Social and emotional skills have been my passion since I started reading about them during my studies to become PE and health education teacher. Learning and teaching these skills truly feels like my calling. I haven’t yet faced another skill that feels as important or overarching. Whether it’s teaching first graders in elementary school or mathematicians at the university, I get every time as excited as I was the first time.

As part of our physical and health education studies in the University of Jyväskylä, we get to do a 10-day internship in an educational institute, company or at school. This was basically my last task before graduation! As soon as I saw that Mightifier was looking for an intern in February, there was no question of where I was going to do my internship. I had followed Mightifier for a couple of years in social media and just as I started looking for an internship, this opportunity jumped out.  Coincidence or fate? I believe in the second one…

The first time I walked into the Mightifier office, it was obvious the room was bursting with enthusiasm! The warm greeting by Mervi, Aliisa, Juha and Kirsi made me feel immediately welcomed. After Kirsi and Aliisa’s introduction, I was ready to start Mightifying. Later I also met  Miika, who made sure, that there has been no shortage of humor during these past ten days.

After introduction day, I got to train students and teachers in an elementary school with the Mighty Booster, Juha. Seeing kids give positive feedback and hug each other after using Mightifier was a very empowering experience. And when they wanted to keep doing it on a Friday afternoon after school had already ended, I was even more convinced that this something that every student needs.

Whether it’s been training teachers and students, making lesson plans for character strengths, talking about Mightifier with principals, or writing a blog, it hasn’t felt like work for a second. Doing something that feels so important and necessary as Mightifier is, really motivates me from inside.

These 10 days have strengthened my perception of how much our teachers and children need these skills that Mightifier helps them to learn. I am happy to see how much teachers are recognizing the importance of teaching social and emotional skills. Future looks bright!
